Linux is an operating system like windows, for PC computers. IMHO it is much much better than Windows except it's incompatibility with direct x and stuff that games need divert me against Linux. But it is almost bug-free and safe!
Most commonly it is used on servers!

(correct me if i'm wrong!)

Ill go more indeph (after all, im posting this message via my SuSE Linux Computer.) Linux is a programmers operating system. Many people mistake the linux system for the GUI or Graphical User Interface that is like the look of windows. But in truth, linux is really exactly like dos, but more complex. The GUI (like windows explorer) is most commonly KDE or GNOME, and thats what makes it looks a bit like windows. Its true, linux does not have dirrect game support, but companys do develop for linux, games like Soldier of Fortune and Project IGI have been released for linux. Also, the program named wine allows linux users to use windows apps on their linux computer. And it works for the most part (wineX is more for games, wine is for normal apps.) Linux is good for servers because it is fast, but it is actually more expensive than windows server software. The notes about linux is that you will never get popups and that you will never get a virus. Why? People who develop viruses dont develop for a not too widely used OS.

My advice for people who use Windows is to partition your hard drive and install linux too. Its a great way to deversify your computer knowledge. Its true though that if you use a modem for the internet (dialup) you cannot use linux for the internet. But if you have cable internet or shared dialup, it will work. Linux is a great alternitive for linux (and linux comes with OpenOffice which is the same as Microsoft word, but free!)
